My Journey Through Online Communities: Active Worlds and EVE Online


Today, I want to share about some of the online communities I’ve been part of throughout my life. There have been quite a few, but two stand out as my homes on the net.

Active Worlds

First, there’s Active Worlds, or AW as most of us call it. It’s a 3D sandbox where you can build cities and worlds, and socialize with others. Active Worlds has been around since about 1995, providing a virtual space for creativity and connection. In Active Worlds, I go by the name Dovestar. I’ve built a few cities and created around seven different worlds. For quite a few years, I also hosted parties within the AW universe with a live DJ. Over the years, I’ve made many friends in Active Worlds. Sadly, I’ve lost some to death and others have left AW for various reasons. Like any community, it has had its drama, but in the long run, it has been a pleasure being part of that community for 28 years of my life so far.

EVE Online

The other is EVE Online, a space-based game that I believe has been around since about 2007. EVE offers a vast array of activities, from industry and mining to PvE and PvP battles. You can join or create Corporations and Alliances, making it a complex and often dramatic online community, much like any other. In EVE Online, my main character is named Nomad Ratsevod. I’ve made a lot of friends through the corporations and the alliance I’m part of. The game has its fair share of drama, but considering it includes pirate-like mentalities and warfare, it’s expected. You gain allies and enemies within the game, sometimes just to be content for another alliance or corporation, and individual players too.

So far, I am proud to be a part of both these communities and enjoy the gameplay along with the socialization within both. If you find yourself in either of these games, feel free to add me as a friend and send me a message.

Rediscovering Respect in Modern Times


In today’s fast-paced world, the art of showing respect seems to be fading. People often demand respect but forget to give it in return. We are all unique, each with our own life perspectives, and disagreements are inevitable. However, this doesn’t give us the right to be disrespectful or hateful towards those who think differently. We should honor the opinions and beliefs of others and expect the same respect in return.

Embracing Diverse Lifestyles

When someone chooses a different lifestyle than yours, it doesn’t inherently cause harm to you or others. Individuals have the right to choose how they want to live their lives, within reason. As long as their choices don’t harm others, it shouldn’t be anyone’s concern. Respect and compassion towards others’ choices and beliefs can ensure that everyone gets along just fine in the end.

Owning Our Choices and Their Consequences

We all have free will and the right to make our own choices. With that freedom comes responsibility—we must own our actions and words. As a result, we will face the rewards or consequences of those actions. If we take a closer look at our choices, we may realize they aren’t always accepted or embraced by the majority of society. Therefore, we should be more tolerant of the choices made by others.

The Power of Compassion and Forgiveness

Remember, no man or woman is perfect, and no one has made all the right choices in life. With this understanding, we should strive to have more compassion and forgiveness in our hearts. By doing so, we can create a more respectful and empathetic world for everyone.

In the end, respect, compassion, and forgiveness are crucial values that can help bridge the gaps between different perspectives and lifestyles. Let’s make an effort to revive these virtues in our daily lives and interactions.

In contemporary society, there exists a perception among the younger generation that the elderly are dispensable and lack significance. This stands in contrast to historical norms, where elders were revered for their wisdom and sought after for guidance, receiving support from the community. It’s essential to recognize that today’s older generation once occupied the role of youth and actively contributed to shaping our modern world. They played a pivotal role in the development and manufacturing of the electronic devices that many young people now appreciate.

Many of the Elderly of today were champions of civil rights, visionaries, and grassroots activists fought for the freedoms and rights enjoyed by people today. Their unwavering dedication and sacrifice significantly contributed to creating a better world. Their legacy paved the way for those who continue to champion equality and human dignity.

“Despite their tireless efforts, some refer to them as ‘boomers’ and view them as an additional burden on our government and a segment of today’s younger generation. However, it’s essential to recognize that they still have much to contribute. Ageism is a pervasive issue that unfairly diminishes individuals based on their age, whether they are elders or children. Regardless of their life stage, everyone deserves equal respect, just as those in their prime working years do. Life itself is precious and should be cherished by all of us. Basic respect is a fundamental right for every human being. Unfortunately, as a species, we still have progress to make in terms of respecting life and valuing each individual. Often, we find ourselves entangled in tribalism, an ‘us vs. them’ mentality, and separatism. However, there is hope that one day we will recognize our shared humanity, transcending differences in beliefs to unite and strengthen our collective race.

In our journey through life, let us recognize that age should never be a barrier to respect. Whether young or old, each person contributes to the rich tapestry of human experience.
